"COMPUTER AND KEYBOARD"
Episode #50

In the party boxes today a computer and keyboard - or is it a camera and a snowboard? Meanwhile Poppy is trying to have a nap but strange noises keep interrupting her.

1) EXPLORING YOUR BODY
Help your child to draw a computer outside on concrete using coloured chalk. Discuss the alphabet, numbers, or play hopscotch on the 'keyboard'. Using a bucket of water and a broom once the game is finished your child can 'sweep' the computer away.
Point out letters and numbers where you can - the recognition of these is a precursor to learning to read.

2) EXPLORING YOUR MIND
Illustrate 'bumpy' and 'smooth' with a computer keyboard. Let your child feel along the keys, then turn it over and feel the smooth side. Feel other things like a smooth table and the concrete outside. Use reinforcing language, for example 'feel the rough concrete' 'feel the smooth table' and so on.
Having real world objects to physically feel while a child hears the description reinforces the learning. Take every opportunity to repeat this type of activity.

3) EXPLORING YOUR SELF
There are many great child friendly websites, however you could consider installing a free internet safety programme if your child likes to play on the computer and you're not always right there beside them. For more information on 'cybersafety' go to: www.netsafe.org.nz
